How to know if you are being scammed by the supplement industry.
Are vitamins or multivitamins you buy always healthy for you? Did you know that MOST vitamins you purchase are synthetic? (ie- not naturally occurring- made in a lab)
Most people think of vitamins and supplements as being inherently healthy and don't really look into what they are made of, how they are made or if they are even efficacious (do they actually do what they are supposed to do). It's a wild wild west of companies and products out there with more on the market every day. As a natural born skeptic, I like to know the truth and what's worth buying and what actually works.
First you should know that there are only a few companies that third party test product ingredients, safety and that what's on the label is actually in the bottle. NSF, UL, and USP are 3 companies that test products although MOST products on the shelf have never been tested. The FDA will not verify that what is on the label is actually in the product, contains the amount it's says it does, or test it for heavy metals, fungicides, pesticides, etc. You get the idea. You buy at your own risk if it does not have an NSF, UL (tests mostly electronics), or USP certification ON the bottle!
Vitamins: You automatically think "healthy." Why? Most are made of coal tar or other industrial chemicals and put inside a hard shell that many times doesn't even break down in your digestive system. If you want vitamins that are from real food, choose a whole food supplement. Not something that is powdered containing powdered vitamins. Just because they come in a powder or chewable doesn't mean they are in whole food form. Ascorbate or ascorbic acid is NOT the same as vitamin C in an orange. Folic acid is the synthetic version of the whole food form folate. I'm willing to bet nothing on your supplement bottles is the whole food form. Because of all the MTHFR and other genetic varients some companies have started adding folate instead of folic acid. However all the other nutrients are still isolates and not the whole food form. And mostly synthetic (made from industrial chemicals).
I choose to not use anything not third-party tested or anything synthetic. All the influencers and even medical professionals with their own line of products don't want you to understand any of this. They are counting on your ignorance. Let's just make the marketing fun and shiny and impress you with how much energy they have now. lol.
